X-MEN #26: Civil Disobedience! (Bloodties Part II)

Various forces collide on Genosha!

Originally Published November 1993

Previously, in Avengers #368 (by Bob Harras, Steve Epting, Tom Palmer et al)

It's civil war in Genosha as the Mutates are uprising against the Magistrates and the Government that stripped them of their humanity. The US Government is sending its top Totally-For-Sure-a-Human Expert on Mutations, Charles Xavier, to suss out what's going on down there, along with the faces of the Genoshan Mutate Movement, Philip Moreau and Jenny Ransome, and some members of the Avengers West Coast (who are like the regular Avengers, but three hours later.) The Government, in the form of everyone's favourite crewcut dweeb Peter Henry Gyrich, is worried that it might somehow draw the attention of the recently-active Magneto. Charles is unconcerned.

All right, that shit's funny

The Avengers, meanwhile, are banned in Genosha due to certain members having a personal connection to the conflict. The excitement in this comic where the heroes are bureaucratically prevented from doing any heroics is palpable. Maybe they'll file a grievance.

It all builds to a big reveal that the man inciting the insurrection on Genosha is none other than your favourite fanatic Fabian Cortez, who has kidnapped Luna, the daughter of Quicksilver and Crystal and therefore the granddaughter of Magneto, meaning that she's a big deal to Fabian and his dwindling fanbase.

And now...

Fabian (Cortez, not Nicieza) is putting the world on notice, attempting to rally the Mutates in Magneto's name while using Luna as a prop. From the X-Men's viewpoint, it seems that Fabian, not knowing that Magneto is permanently out of commission, is using the master of magnetism's granddaughter as protection against Magneto's wrath -- being that Fabian let him get killed sometime back and all.

Quicksilver may be dubious, but Gambit sees it as an advantage -- with Fabian under the impression he needs protecting, that may make it all the easier for the X-Men to get close.

While watching over the comatose Magneto up in space, Colossus has a chat with Exodus about their competing visions on how best to go forward. Colossus had hoped for peaceful seclusion, while Exodus is more hawkish, and also the kind of guy who still feels like he's taking orders from his vegetative husk of a boss. One conversation with Exodus has Colossus wondering what the eff he's gotten himself into.

Meanwhile, the Avengers fight their way through the SHIELD Blockade to get to their Quinjets -- they have specific orders to not go to Genosha, but they feel like they should go anyway.

On Genosha, Xavier and Beast use an ambush as cover to rendezvous with some more of Xavier's secret colleagues -- a unique human-mutate combo battalion devoted to combatting atrocities on both sides of the conflict. There's something a bit too on-the-nose about Xavier's official alignment being centrist, I won't comment on it -- do with it what you will

Elsewhere on the island, the X-Men have arrived but before they can get their bearings, they run into some Magneto Converts ready to rumble.

Admittedly, there are less badass things to do than name yourself after a Metallica song or a Clint Eastwood movie

Quicksilver, however, is miffed at the invocation of his father and, as he lets his fists of fury fly, lets it slip that Magneto's Way got him burned out and left in a state of living death -- a fact that is overheard by a nearby Fabian Cortez, who takes that as his cue to do genocide if he wants.

Also converging on the island after a seemingly brisk transcontinental flight, are the Avengers, who aim to put a stop to the bloodshed after taking a moment to pause with their tits out.

The Avengers aren't really here as peacemakers however, they're here to get Luna -- as demonstrated when they start firing indiscriminately on both the human and mutant combatants.

Earth's Mightiest Heroes?

Crystal tries to do a little crowd control but her power goes haywire and fries seemingly everyone on the human side and that side alone.

This is gonna be so much paperwork

Someone monkeyed with the Earth's Magnetic Field to send Crystal's power into overdrive, but whomst...?

Let's talk more about it later!
